The “Isla del Encanto” is one step closer to fully legalizing esports, and regular sports betting (mind you!), thanks to a new bill signed by the outgoing governor of the US territory of Puerto Rico .
The news comes after the tiny Caribbean island had already –sorta– legalized sports betting back in 2019, however, not really actually allowing any sportsbook-type business to lay roots in the state. Thus, project #1534’s main purpose will be to prepare the ground for new online betting industries to become part of Puerto Rico’s active economy, creating tons of new well-remunerated jobs for the local communities.

With the relative success of similar online betting ventures springing all over Latin America, Puerto Rico authorities are hoping that the new online betting market will create many more jobs for the local populace, as recently pointed out by the US territory Governor in a statement to the media: “It is with great satisfaction that I sign the PJ 1543, as it leads the esports and sports betting industry in encouraging business and jobs in this sector. This amendment will complete and launch a new industry with the potential to create thousands of jobs.”
It will now fall on incoming Governor Pedro Pierluisi to finish the job and ensure the proper installation and operation of the new local betting businesses.
