“WHERE HALO MEETS PORTAL”: SPLITGATE MAKES THE ROUNDS
- PVP portal shooter with a throwback edge
- Cross-play enabled on XBOX, PlayStation and PC
- Endless ways to frag in a Halo 2 & 3-style gameplay
Sharpshooters now have a spot to upscale their skills in a cross-play, PvP, portal shooter milieu.
The gameplay is a sort of throw-back, set to go about portals in order to outsmart and outplay, flank and fly. Or flee. Endless ways to frag –in their words– together with good weaponry, exotic locations and plenty arenas; all this, plus the fact that it’s cross-play enabled on XBOX, PlayStation and PC, are all a markup. Their open beta version lets you try out the goodies first, as it should be. Can’t be too careful.

THE START
Splitgate is the brainchild of 1047 Games, founded by Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian in a Stanford dorm room… well, much like everything else. It started out as a portals project demo, and it blasted out from there. Aimed at bringing back PvP shooters, it was described by IGN as “Halo meets Portal” making reference to the Halo 2&3-specific gameplay style.
ARENAS, ARENAS EVERYWHERE
IMPACT ARENA
Silvertree Farms became a Splitgate arena after discovering aliens moved about by portals and had wrecked a spacecraft there. The deal here is to find the Shotgun or Plasma Rifle.
OASIS ARENA
Luxury-resort-turned-battlefield, it’s a sunny, sandy beachside arena that’s horizon-focused, so the best call here is a long-range weapon to cut the distances short.
LAVAWELL ARENA
The first arena not powered by antimatter (what’s the use if there’s trusty volcano geothermal energy nearby?) High-tech labs coupled with a lava trench, a Rocket Launcher and Railgun spawn make for a steady amount of worrying.
ABYSS ARENA
An underground cave with a big hole in the middle… you can’t be heard by outside shooters, so basically, no perishing allowed here!
PANTHEON ARENA
The temple Pantheon is where portal technology was first detected; it is now an 8000-seater venue which sells out at tourneys, has four corners, and snipers on each side.
OLYMPUS ARENA
Olympus Arena floats among the clouds, and has a safety-net portal platform at the bottom, a big must for life-saving in case you fall…
HIGHWIND ARENA
A treehouse at the top of the tallest Japanese tree, with corridors and exposed ramps, plus very few places to hide; it is the smallest arena in Splitgate.
CLUB SILO ARENA
From underground missile base to night club, where you can place bets on competitors. Will wonders never cease…
STADIUM ARENA
Because gladiators… This is a futuristic-type arena with an open center, designed for long-distance and close-quarter scrimmaging. The best fighters get to be immortalized with holograms.
ATLANTIS ARENA
An underwater tourist attraction plus an open center with The BFB.
HELIX ARENA
Control of the Rocket Launcher is critical in this training venue with long hallways and corridors.
