LEAGUE OF LEGENDS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CONFIRMED
Riot Games’ confirms as of now that the 2021 League of Legends World Championship is set to begin on October 5th, in Iceland. Last month, the message was that they had “swapped horses in the middle of the river” and changed the venue from China to Europe because of the usual culprit, COVID-19 (yeah, the gift that keeps on giving.) In any case –as if there weren’t COVID-19 cases everywhere by now– the tournament will kick off in Iceland, in October, and in an audience-less fashion. (Well, to be fair, it’s the more dangerous Delta variant of the virus that’s wrecking up the plans.)
NO AUDIENCE, PLEASE
The previous tournament held earlier this year, which was the Mid-Season Invitational (also in Iceland) met not only a very positive response in general, but it also turned out pretty well since they held it without an audience. So that took care of the venue.
The company revealed in a statement that, since May saw no COVID-19 cases among players, staff and other helpers, the decision was a no-brainer. Thus, like MSI, Worlds will not be carried out with a live audience, whether we like it or not.
THE WHAT, THE WHERE, THE WHY & THE WHEN
Worlds 2021 is set to take place at Iceland’s Laugardalshöll Indoor Sporting Arena, which is the same venue where Riot Games hosted their VALORANT Masters and Mid-Season Invitational tournaments.
Worlds 2021’s play-in stage is set to commence on October 5th; the main event will follow by starting on October 11th, and the Grand Finals are scheduled to take place November 6th. There will be 5 stages, as always, and the playoffs will kick off with the quarter-finals from the 22nd to the 25th, with semifinals on October 30-31st and the finals (as we already said, in case you didn’t read) on November 6th.
Of all the teams, only the Vietnam Championship Series will probably miss out on this event. Vietnam players have been heavily restricted regarding visas by the COVID-19 guidelines, and it’s anybody’s guess how Riot will resolve the format without this region. Participants that will attend include EDward Gaming, DWG KIA, MAD Lions, and 100 Thieves.
