HOW RIOT IS TACKLING COVID-19 SAFETY CHALLENGES DURING THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
The ongoing League of Legends World Championship created a whole new set of safety challenges for Riot.
The 10th edition of the global League of Legends competition is definitely unlike any previous installment before, but Riot, the event organizers, have put into action a special plan of safety measures designed to keep infection to the best possible minimum.
According to Noah Smith, who writes for the Washington Post, the World Championship has imposed a rigorous set of measures that included quarantine periods for new arrivals, regular testing and the application of the more standard distance-keeping rules. The Championship, which is set at Shanghai China, started back Sept 25th and will continue on until October 31st, 2020.

The Measures
China’s shady record in transparency when sharing truthful reports on the incidence of the virus have kept the organizers at their toes at all times, however, Riot managed to work closely alongside the local health authorities to create a “Bubble” effect, and guarantee the safety for players, staff and other site visitors.
Some of the safety measures put into effect at the Shanghai sites include:
- Weekly Covid-19 tests for players plus daily temperature checks.
- Teams were forced to undergo a 14-day quarantine upon arrival.
- Distance-keeping measures and mandatory use of respiratory masks.
The early stages are taking place at the Shanghai Media Tech Studio, while the Finals will be held at the Pudong Football Stadium.
In regards to a live audience, Riot hasn’t made up its mind yet on whether they will allow a limited audience for the Finals. We will keep you posted on any developments.
