According to the latest figures released by app-business surveyors SensorTower.com, multiplayer battle-arena Honor of Kings led the mobile game revenue charts during the last month of December 2020 with $250 million in gross player purchases, closely followed in second place by popular battle-royale PUBG Mobile with $177 million. 

Additionally, it was revealed that, even though China has always been the Mecca of mobile gaming (in terms of gross total mobile game revenue), other neighboring countries, such as Japan and Thailand, are beginning to take a bigger piece of the earnings pie for on-the-go titles, formerly almost the sole property of the sinese market.

Honor of Kings & PUBG Mobile Rule the Mobile Gaming Niche

SensorTower.com, respected data surveyors of the mobile-game arena, released yesterday their monthly revenue report for gaming apps released in both the App Store and Google Play merchants, with both Tencent titles Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile keeping the very honourable first and second spots in total player spending.

Mobile Gaming is a Chinese Term

Mobile gaming has been a nearly, uniquely Chinese matter ever since the first game apps started showing up on various smartphone operating systems. This was likely due to the relative low cost of mobile titles, which has been more accessible to a Chinese market that lacked the same purchasing power of other richer nations like Japan or the United States. 

Notwithstanding, the latest revenue figures produced by SensorTower.com are challenging this old gaming notion. For the first time in the monthly report’s history, Japan has taken on the leading position as the most lucrative country overall for one single game (Genshin Impact), with an estimated $49.6 million in player purchases, contributing nearly 31% of the whole worldwide game revenue count. 

Overall, China remains the more profitable mobile game market, as shown by its whopping 96% share of the Honor of King’s total download earnings. Taiwan and Thailand, the second and third best selling destinations for the Tencent title, pale in comparison with only 1.4 and 1.2% share respectively.
