NINTENDO SHUNS CROSS-PLATFORM PLAY FOR ITS TITLES
It seems Nintendo has no intention of including and integrating cross-platform play into its games, and this has been reiterated by its president Shuntaro Furukawa.
Despite the fact that there are very many different consoles, it has stopped being a problem to own one specific console and not the other, since more and more developers have included cross-platform play into their games, making it easier to play with your friends online even if you all own different consoles… well, at least for some games.

No Cross-Platform Play For Nintendo
Nintendo has, in a manner of speaking, forced more and more of its customers to resort to owning at least two consoles, since it has set itself very much apart from its competitors and their products; plus, they are not too keen on sharing in-house titles, and this goes especially for the Switch. Now you can see many people that own both a PS and a Switch, for example.
Even though The Pokemon Company is going to be releasing Pokemon Unite soon, and having revealed that it will support cross-platform play between Switch and mobile, Nintendo has again stressed the fact that it currently has no plans to do the same with its own titles. “It was decided that given the genre of the game and the anticipated player population, a cross-platform format was appropriate,” president Furukawa explained regarding the Pokemon Unite game. But, hey, that’s still a ‘no-go’ for Mario Karts and other Nintendo goodies to be able to pop up on other platforms.
Cross-play platform games are still in their early stages; very few games cover all platforms, with only 3 games currently supporting all of them. A huge reason for cross-platform not happening for all games is the cost (as always) since it takes a fortune to port the game to the different systems AND for it to run smoothly. For example, it took Sony a very long time and a lot of money to allow for Fortnite PS4 cross-play.
Some of the top cross-play games include: Fortnite, Rocket League, Minecraft, among others.
