Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Sony’s Debuts Trailer For Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Given that Marvel’s Spider-Man was one of the best superhero video games, one might have thought a sequel was in the making… Wrong.

At its Future of Gaming event last Thursday, Sony announced what apparently was a sequel for the upcoming PlayStation 5. Well not so much… your friendly neighborhood spider game is more of an “expansion and enhancement to the previous game”, a “standalone game” if you will.

Sony’s head of European business Simon Rutter clarified to the spinoff nature of the Spider-man: Miles Morales game, rather than it being a sequel, since this particular series of Spider-Man games isn’t really tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) even if Spidey has appeared in MCU movies which include Avengers: Endgame. Sony’s ownership of the spider-sense wielding character has brought about many complications for its participation in Disney-owned MCU movies, so all that Spider-Man jazz built up for Sony’s PlayStation is a separate thing.

The original 2018 game left us lots of unresolved threads for the sequel, so it was only logical that we assumed the SMMM game was a sequel, rather than an expansion. But to tell the truth, it was the PlayStation 5 reveal event that left us thinking Spider-Man Miles Morales was a brand new, fully-fledged Spider-Man game for Sony’s next-gen console. (BTW, did you stream the event on LevelUp.bet?)

“I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game,” said Rutter. “There’s a substantial Miles Morales component – which is the expansion element – but also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PS5 technology and features.”
